Implementing Screening and Treatment for Depression for Patients Undergoing Long-term Dialysis

Study Years: 2024-2027

Adults receiving dialysis treatment are four times more likely to have major depressive disorder (MDD) than the general population. Treatment with dialysis is demanding and patients' ability to manage these complex demands is impaired if they also have untreated MDD. Despite universal screening for depression required by Medicare, MDD detection and treatment remain suboptimal for patients who receive dialysis.

This project aims to scale up and disseminate the successful in-unit depression screening and treatment program developed and tested in the ASCEND trial led by Dr. Raj Mehrotra of the University of Washington (UW) Kidney Research Institute in 80 units of a national dialysis chain. Dr. Goff leads the implementation evaluation aspect of the study.

The objective of this study was to (1) determine the effect of an engagement interview on acceptance of treatment for depression; (2) compare the efficacy of sertraline versus cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for depression symptoms among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) receiving hemodialysis.
